Bigger Than Us is a semi-abstract landscape that explores the powerful, awe-inspiring scale of nature. Inspired by the coastal elements of the Pacific Northwest, the painting captures a fleeting glimpse of weather where the mountains become hidden in rolling fog and sea spray. The composition utilizes layered, horizontal bands of colour to compress visual depth, drawing the viewer’s eye into the heavy atmosphere. A dark, looming forest ridge anchors the upper portion of the canvas. Below it, an expressive field of deep indigo, teal, and aqua represents the turbulent tide rolling over hidden rocks. The lower foreground incorporates vertical drips and scratched textures, mimicking the continuous movement of water and the mist rising off the shoreline. I used a cool-toned palette balanced by subtle warm undertones pushing through the darker values. By loosening my brushwork and leaning toward abstraction, I shift focus away from strict realism to convey big emotion and power. The painting stands as a visual reminder of environments that are vast, uncontrollable, and ultimately much larger than ourselves.
